What to do on a short trip to Seville

In January 2025 we went on a short trip to Seville. The capital city of Andalucia is very beautiful and in January, which is off season, you can enjoy the city without unbearable heat and with cheaper prices for hotels.

We stayed at the Hotel Petit Palace Puerta de Triana in the city center for two nights with breakfast and payed approx. 200€ including parking. The hotel is modern and chic.

The breakfast at the hotel was varied and catered to different preferences, offering a wide range of options. It was also suitable for individuals with allergies, with many choices specifically designed to accommodate various dietary restrictions.

The location of the hotel was perfect to explore the city by foot.

On our first day we went to the Palacio de Las Dueñas. The Palacio de las Dueñas in Seville is a historic palace that combines Gothic, Mudejar, and Renaissance architecture. Built in the 15th century, it has gardens, courtyards, and a collection of art and antiques. The palace was once home to Spanish nobility and is now a museum open to visitors.

The entry fee is 14€ per person and compared to other attractions in Sevilla it is quite expensive, as it is not that big and we were finished in one and a half hours although we did not rush.

On the other hand the garden is very nice and the palace itself has many interesting details to offer.

After that we went to see the Setas. The Setas (mushrooms in englisch) in Seville, also called Metropol Parasol, is a wooden structure in La Encarnación Square. Designed by Jürgen Mayer, it consists of large mushroom-shaped canopies. Visitors can walk on top for views of the city, but we didn’t do that on this trip as it was raining. For the walk on top of the Setas, there is an entry fee und you can buy tickets here. Instead we decided to take a break and found a nice café with “Setas”-view.

The next day our first stop was the Alcázar of Seville. The Alcázar of Seville is a royal palace originally developed by Moorish kings. It features a mix of architectural styles, including Islamic, Gothic, Renaissance, and Baroque. The palace is known for its beautiful gardens, intricate tilework and historic significance. It is still used by the Spanish royal family for official events. It is not possible to visit the Alcázar when the Spanish royal family is staying there. The areas used by the royal family are typically closed to the public during their visits. It is always a good idea to check for any specific closures or restrictions before planning your visit.

You can buy tickets here and a visit of the Museo de la Cerámica de Triana and the Antiquarium is also included in the ticket, but we didn’t make use of it.

After the Alcázar we made a lunch stop at restaurant Malquerer, which we can recommend. They have some vegetarian options as well and we ate some tapas and went for some Natas for dessert after that. Although Natas are portuguese, they were very good and the place was crowded, even though there was no seating.

Our next stop, which is almost mandatory when in Seville, is the Plaza de España. There is no entrance fee yet, although Seville’s mayor already announced there will be one in the near future for conservation and ensuring the safety of the place.

The architecture of the Plaza de España combines the Renaissance and Moorish style. It was built in 1929 for the Ibero-American Exposition to celebrate Spain’s ties with Latin America. The plaza’s walls feature ceramic tiles representing Spain’s 48 provinces. It has a canal with four bridges, each symbolizing a historical Spanish kingdom. The place was a Filming Location for several times and Featured in movies like Star Wars: Episode II and Lawrence of Arabia.

You can rent a boat to go across the canal, but we wouldn’t recommend it in the summer heat, as we have seen people hiding from the sun under the bridges. If you go there in the summertime, it is best in the early morning or evening.

Also there are often free Flamenco shows on the Plaza.

At night we went to a very nice Restaurant close to the Setas, so we could combine seeing the Setas at night and having dinner. It is called Taberna Zurbarán and has various plates and tapas, also vegetarian friendly.

On our last day we first went to Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla and did not buy the tickets online upfront, but on site for 10€ per person. The Plaza de Toros de la Real Maestranza de Caballería de Sevilla is the oldest bullring in Spain, built in 1761. It has a beautiful Baroque design with a yellow and white façade and a unique oval shape. The bullring is the center of Seville’s bullfighting tradition and hosts the famous Feria de Abril, one of Spain’s biggest bullfighting events. Inside, there is a museum with historical costumes, paintings, and bullfighting memorabilia. Although we are no bullfighting fans, we wanted to take a look at this big part of Spain’s history and culture.

Our final stop, after a quick lunch at the Bar Restaurante Casa Román, was the Catedral de Sevilla. It is definitely worth a visit as is the largest Gothic cathedral in the world and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The Cathedral of Seville, also known as Catedral de Santa María de la Sede, was built on the site of a former mosque and it still features the Giralda, a stunning minaret-turned-bell tower with a lot of stairs, but a beautiful view over the city. Inside, you’ll find the tomb of Christopher Columbus, making it a significant historical landmark. The cathedral’s massive gold altarpiece, the Retablo Mayor, is one of the largest and most impressive in the world, covered in intricate carvings and gold leaf.

You can buy tickets for the cathedral online in advance on the official website. The entrance fee online is about 13€ and cheaper than buying it on-site.

There are many websites that offer tickets online, but they are mostly more expensive, so it is always worth comparing and buying the tickets on the official websites.

History, Significance, and Route of the Aqueducts

You like to enjoy some history when you are in holiday? This is were you can have a nice afternoon or morning walk. These photos were taken during late may/early June so we had the flowers in beautiful colours, might not look like this in late summer.

In light of the need for drinking water and water for the local salt industry, the Romans wanted to leave an example of their expertise in engineering and construction in the 1st century AD. Alongside the construction of the city’s main Roman monuments, they built an aqueduct over 7 km long. This aqueduct has been declared a cultural heritage site and spans several kilometers, with some sections still preserved. It consists of typical Roman architectural elements such as arches, channels, and bridges. The structure is primarily built from stone and mortar, which explains its durability. Currently, it consists of 5 sections that lie towards the Suspiro del Moro highway. To see all parts, the Almuñécar Tourist Office provides a free aqueduct route.

Originally, the aqueduct was not an attraction but served to transport water from the nearby mountains into the city to supply the growing population and meet their agricultural needs. The construction of the aqueduct was crucial for the development and growth of Almuñécar in ancient times.

Some parts of the aqueduct are still visible and well-preserved today, while others have been damaged or destroyed over the centuries. The well-preserved sections are a significant archaeological monument and an important tourist attraction in the region. Several restoration projects aim to preserve and protect the aqueduct so that future generations can continue to admire it.

The city offers guided tours that provide interesting insights into the history and function of the aqueduct. Moreover, the aqueduct is often a highlight in cultural and historical excursions in the region.

Almuñécar – Exploring a beautiful small town in Andalusia

You probably haven’t heard of Almuñécar, but we don’t want to withhold this special place from you.

Almuñécar may not be a big city in Andalusia like Malaga or Granada, but it is a small coastal town that will cause unforgettable memories.

It is also perfectly located, so that you can do day trips within an hour and visit the big cities.

This small place located by the beach is the perfect hideaway, if you want to relax, but also want to have options to explore the surroundings.

Besides its beautiful beaches, Almuñécar has a rich history that is worth exploring.

Here are the most important historical facts about Almuñécar, Spain:

The town was founded by the Phoenicians (c. 800 BCE) and known as “Sexi.” This is why you often read the word “sexi” in many company names, when you stroll through the streets. And we were a bit confused, when we read it without knowing its origin at first.

Conquered by the Romans in the 3rd century BCE and developed as “Firmum Iulium Sexi” the city became a center for fish salting and garum production.

It was incorporated into the Nasrid Kingdom of Granada in the 13th century, with notable defensive structures like the Castillo de San Miguel, which you can visit today.

In 1489 the Christian Reconquest took place. It was captured by the Catholic Monarchs Ferdinand and Isabella, ending nearly 800 years of Muslim rule.

In the 19th-20th Almuñécar transitioned towards tourism, leveraging its historical sites, favorable climate and beaches.

These key points encapsulate Almuñécar’s rich and diverse history.

Here are some Must-Sees in Almuñécar:

Castillo de San Miguel: This castle, with origins dating back to the Phoenicians and later fortified by the Moors, offers stunning views all over the town and beach and a glimpse into the town’s defensive past.
Cueva de Siete Palacios: An archaeological museum housed in what was once a Roman cistern, featuring artifacts from various periods of Almuñécar’s history.
Roman Aqueduct: The remains of this ancient aqueduct highlight the town’s Roman engineering prowess. It is a bit hidden, but worth visiting.
Parque El Majuelo: A botanical garden with a collection of tropical plants, also home to the ruins of a Roman fish-salting factory. Also there are many events taking place in the park, so it is worth checking out the program.
San Cristobal Beach: One of the main beaches in Almuñécar, offering beautiful views and a range of amenities.

An adventurous Walk

A highlight of our Spain travels was the Caminito del Rey. It was on our Must-Do list for quite a long time and so we decided to finally make it happen.

Here are some facts about the Caminito del Rey:

Caminito del Rey, also known as “The King’s Little Pathway,” is located in the province of Málaga, Andalusia, Spain.

Originally built in 1905, Caminito del Rey was constructed as a maintenance path for workers of a nearby hydroelectric power plant. Due to its unsafe and dangerous condition over the years the caminito had a bad reputation and was known as the most dangerous footpath in the world.

After being closed for over a decade due to safety concerns, Caminito del Rey underwent extensive renovations and reopened to the public in 2015 with modern safety features.

What can you expect during the hike?

During the hike you experience the beauty of breathtaking views and an unforgettable nature. Always keep your belongings close, we know from experience how fast a cellphone can fall down the cliff…

The walk takes approximately 3 hours, but the time flew by so fast, as there is so much to see. Also the path varies. You don’t walk along the cliff all the time, you also walk through forestlike nature. And the highlight waits for you at the end: a suspension bridge (Puente del Rey) with the canyon Tajo de las Palomas underneath you. Our tips for this trip:

Book your tickets in advance, because the Caminito is a famous tourist attraction.

Plan your arrival and departure to the caminito. Depending on how you get there, train or car, the walk does not end where it started. There is a shuttle bus that brings you back to the parking spot, where you can park your car. Plan enough time in advance, so you don’t miss your time slot for the walk. We recommend getting to the parking spot one hour in advance. When the shuttle bus brings you to the Caminito, you still have to walk almost 3 kilometers to the control cabin.

There you receive a helmet and if booked a guided tour (which we recommend) you start with the actual tour.

Bring water and something to eat with you and make sure you have comfortable and suitable walking shoes.

Also if you really are afraid of heights, this beautiful walk might not be the right option for you, because once started, there is no turning back.

Ronda - Rich History meets charming beauty

Ronda is a beautiful town in Spain, located in Màlaga, Andalusia. Known for its stunning views and rich history, it sits high up on a plateau, surrounded by an impressive countryside. The town is divided into two parts: the old Moorish town and the newer part built in the 18th century.

In the old town, you can stroll through narrow streets lined with whitewashed buildings, explore historic landmarks like the Arab baths and the ancient city walls, or relax in one of the cozy cafes tucked away in hidden corners. The newer part of Ronda is full of markets, plazas, and lively restaurants serving delicious Spanish food.

One of Ronda’s most famous attractions is its bullring, one of the oldest and most picturesque in Spain. It’s a must-visit for anyone interested in the country’s bullfighting tradition. You can have a great look at the buĺlring and a delicious dinner with excellent service at the same time, if you decide to visit Restaurante Panorámico. And of course the sundown is unforgettable there.

A must-see in Ronda is the famous bridge called Puente Nuevo, meaning “New Bridge,” even though it’s quite old, finished in 1793. It’s built on a tall plateau, and below runs the Guadalevín River through a deep gorge called El Tajo.

Puente Nuevo is special because it’s not just a bridge; it’s a symbol of strength and endurance. During the Spanish Civil War, it saw some important events. But now, it’s a place where people come to see amazing views and feel the history.

If you visit Ronda, you can walk on the bridge and look down at the river far below.

The iconic bridge has featured in several movies. In “For Your Eyes Only,” a James Bond movie from 1981, it is part of an intense scene. You can also spot it in “The Pride and the Passion,” a movie from 1959 with Cary Grant and Sophia Loren. More recently, it appeared in “Assassin’s Creed” in 2016 and “Brimstone” in 2017. Its dramatic setting and historic charm have made it a popular choice for filmmakers.

Cueva de Nerja – The Most Impressive Cave In Andalusia

Last week we took a trip to Spain, because we could not wait to get some sun and stay at the beach. Vitamin D was something we had not had for months at home. How frustrated we have been, when we realized, it would be rainy and stormy over the few days we would spend in Andalusia.

We stayed in Almuñécar and thought about what we could do when being at the beach is not an option.

Lucky for us Nerja is only 20 minutes away from Almuñécar and we decided to visit the Cave Of Nerja (Cueva de Nerja). We booked the tickets online (for 16,50€ per person) and one hour later we were on our way. We did not have many expectations about the size or the look of the cave, but were blown away. The cave was much bigger than we expected and the atmosphere was amazing. We spent almost an hour in the cave and afterwards we went to the VR room, where every visitor gets VR glasses and headphones.

In the VR experience you can see the history of the formation of the cave and get an explanation of the different parts of this impressive place. And at the end you go out there with a big smile.

So if it is sunny or not, do not miss this unforgettable place when near Nerja.

Here are some facts about the cave of Nerja:

Discovery: The cave was discovered in January 1959 by a group of local boys who stumbled upon its entrance while chasing after bats. The boys informed their friends and eventually, the news reached archaeologist José Luis Serrano.

Age: The cave is estimated to be between 5 and 15 million years old, making it one of the most important geological formations in Europe.

Size: The cave system stretches over approximately 5 kilometers (3.1 miles), although only a small portion of it is open to the public. It consists of a series of chambers and galleries, some of which are enormous in size.

Artifacts: The cave has revealed evidence of human occupation dating back to the Upper Paleolithic period, with paintings and artifacts found within its chambers. These include paintings, pottery, and other items dating back over 20,000 years, making it one of the most important archaeological sites in Spain.

Chamber of the Cataclysm: One of the most impressive chambers in the cave is known as the “Sala de la Cataclysm,” or Chamber of the Cataclysm. It features stunning formations and is named for its collapsed ceiling, believed to have occurred thousands of years ago.

Stalactites and Stalagmites: The cave is famous for its stunning stalactites and stalagmites, formed over millennia by the slow deposition of minerals from dripping water.

Concerts: The cave’s acoustics are remarkable, and it has been used as a venue for concerts and other cultural events. The annual International Festival of Music and Dance of the Cave of Nerja is held here, attracting performers from around the world.

Conservation: Efforts are ongoing to preserve and protect the cave and its fragile ecosystem. Conservation measures are in place to prevent damage from tourism

and ensure that future generations can continue to enjoy this remarkable natural wonder.

A Stunning View and Crystal Clear Water

Nerja is a small but beautiful town located between Málaga and Almuñécar. It is perfect to spend a whole day at the beach and enjoy the clear blue water with its stunning cliffs. Especially from one place you have an unforgettable view. The famous spot “the Balcony of Europe” is a viewpoint with stunning views of the Mediterranean Sea.

Nerja also stroll through the small streets with its white buildings, shops and restaurants. We stopped at an Italian restaurant with a beautiful terrace that is perfect to overlook the beach and the sea. It is a bit touristy, but we didn’t want to miss the view while eating.

One of Nerja’s most iconic attractions is the fascinating Nerja Caves, which are big caves with rocks that hang down from the ceiling and stick up from the ground with prehistoric cave paintings.

Nerja offers a perfect blend of natural beauty, history, and culture, making it a popular destination for tourists seeking both relaxation and exploration along the Mediterranean coast.

Alhambra - A Must-See in Andalusia

A highlight you should not miss when visiting Andalusia is the Alhambra in Granada. It is one of the most visited monuments in this region and a place to remember.

You should plan a whole day for the visit and buy the tickets in advance, otherwise the tickets for the Nasrid palaces might be sold out. We know this from the experience of our first trip to Spain. There are many websites you can buy tickets from, but the official site with the best prices is THIS. We recommend to buy the tickets at least 3-4 weeks upfront.

You can access the Alhambra by public transport or park in one of the parking spots right at the monument for a fee.

Here are some more facts about the Alhambra…

In 1984 the Alhambra was designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site and you will know why when you see the beautiful gardens and stroll through the Nasrid Palaces with its intricate stucco work, colorful tiles, carved wooden ceilings, and ornate archways. The Palaces include the Mexuar, the Comares Palace, and the Palace of the Lions.

Next to the Alhambra is the Generalife, a palace and garden complex built by the Nasrid rulers. It served as a retreat and leisure area for the royalty, featuring lush gardens, fountains, and pavilions.

This place has such a rich and interesting history that I would recommend to dive into before visiting. It reflects the coexistence of different cultures and religions in medieval Spain and serves as a testament to the flourishing of art, science, and philosophy during that period.And here are some photos of our last visit, during summer 2023.
