As I look back on the various times i’ve spent in spanish cities and especially andalucia, one thing always stands out in my memory – the simple pleasure of savoring churros. – Churros, with their jummy crispy exteriors and soft, doughy centers, hold a unique allure. Coated in a dusting of sugar and sometimes even cinnamon, they embody the essence of comfort food. I think there is almost nothing better than some churros, palm trees, an spanish old-town and sunny weather combined.

Los churros son vida is a spanish saying and means; Churros are life. Whether enjoyed alongside a cup of thick, velvety chocolate or savored on their own, churros possess a simple yet irresistible charm. Churros make an excellent breakfast dish (or addition), alternatively they are commonly enjoyed as a snack between lunch and dinner. This reflects even in the times when churros are available, more an that when we talk about the facts.

Churros are often enjoyed for breakfast, dipped in thick hot chocolate or café con leche (coffee with milk). A lot of cafes sell churros, but there are also a lot of street vendors and commited “churrerias” which specialized in making and selling churros.

Porras and Churros

Even though churros are better known, they’re not the only tasty fingerfood. Porras often get mistaken for churros or are often being sold under the headline churro. They are a bit lighter than churros and not quite as cripsy. Porras are also a bit larger and have a similar taste and appearance as they are also golden and have a stick like shape. Recipe wise they are a bit different but as we are here to enjoy, it’s those results which matter – and they are tasty!

– The Chocolate: Don’t confuse the churro hot chocolate with the hot chocolate you drink. The churro chocolate is hot, thick and resembles more of a pudding that can be eaten with a spoon. I can recommend to drink it once its cooled down and you’ve dipped churros into it and finished all your churros. But that’s just me.

– Specific Churro-Times: Most cafes and churrerias only have churros for breakfist times until 12:00 o’clock and then again after 17:00 o’clock (5 PM). In between you will have a hard time finding churros.Churros are mostly enjoyed for breakfast and between lunch and dinner and usually come with a cup of hot chocolate.

– Simple Ingredients: Traditional churros are made from a simple dough mixture of flour, water, and salt, which is then piped into hot oil for frying. The dough can be shaped into long sticks or looped into spirals, depending on regional preferences.

– Historical Roots: Churros have a fascinating history tracing back to Spain, where it is believed they were inspired by Chinese cuisine.

– Churro Festivals: In various regions of Spain and also Latin America, churros are celebrated in dedicated festivals and events. These festivals often feature churro-making competitions, where participants showcase their skills in crafting the perfect churro. – So if you like churros as much as I do, you should look into that as well.
